The first must become last

“He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.”” Mark 9:36

Our text this week explains the importance of service over self. In a world where the expectation is to get all you can get while you can get it, Jesus radically challenges us to meet a new standard. We are to see our victories and accomplishments in the impact we have made on others. I have read over this passage many times and have always focused on the “first must become last” portion and not so much on the “servant of all” part. I believe we get the idea that we are to put our family above ourselves and maybe even a few close friends, but how about serving those who are not like us, who we don’t have a vested interest in. Jesus is saying serve the homeless before ourselves, serve the prostitute before ourselves, serve the neighbor who doesn’t have the same beliefs as I do before ourselves. Our challenge this week is to look up. Look above our busy schedules and see Jesus in the people all around us. See the opportunity to serve Christ by serving others.

May you and your families have a blessed week, Brian, Mary, Brylee, Holland Funderburk
